After doing a few projects, he marked his directorial debut with the short film, Yaadon Ki Baraat in 2013 produced by his wife, Priyanka Dutt, a member of a filmy family. Priyanka Dutt is a well-known film producer in Telugu film industry. She is the daughter of well-known producer and distributor C. Ashwini Dutt. His sister-in-law Swapna Dutt is also a film producer. Ashwini Dutt is the founder of Vyjayanthi Movies. Yevade Subramanyam is his first movie as a film director.

- In 2007, he began his career as an assistant director with the Telugu film Nenu Meeku Telusa. Later, He worked as an assistant to the Indian film director Sekhar Kammula in Leader (2010) and Life Is Beautiful (2012). Nag Ashwin also acted in small roles in all three films.
- His directorial debut film Yevade Subramanyam (2015) received mixed-to-positive reviews and a short time after its release was given the title of a cult classic.
- In 2018, he directed the Telugu film titled Mahanati starring Keerthy Suresh. The film was a biopic of the Indian actress Savitri.
