His parents divorced when he was two years old and his mother remarried to Peter E. Haas. He is an heir to the Levi Strauss Fortune. Daniel says he grew up ‘most of the time in [Hass] house.’ His father was executive director of the Jewish Community Federation of San Francisco. He has two brothers, Ari and Alexander Lurie, and one sister Sonia Lurie. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Duke University. After school, he worked on Bill Bradley’s 2000 presidential campaign as a field organizer in Lowa. In 2005, he founded the Tipping Point Community, and after 15 years leading the organization, he stepped down as CEO. He is the mayor-elect of San Francisco, in the 2024 election.
