Dominique Moceanu is a retired American gymnast and author, she is known as a member of the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Moceanu was a delight to watch on the balance beam with well-skilled floor exercise.

At the age of 10, she earned her first national berth and went to represent the United States in junior levels international competitions. Dominique Moceanu won a silver medal at the 1992 Junior Pan American Games and at the junior national championship in 194.

In 1995 she won an all-around title at the US National Championships becoming the youngest gymnast to achieve that. She also became the first American to win the all-around gold medal during the 1998 Goodwill Games. She retired in 2000 due to injuries, and family problems made a comeback in 2005, and retired again a year after.

Who is Dominique Moceanu?

American gymnast who was the youngest U.S. gymnast ever to win an Olympic gold medal, at the age of thirteen and a half. She was on the U.S. women’s gymnastics team known as the Magnificent Seven. She was part of the US Olympic gymnastics team with Shannon Miller.

Childhood & Early Life

Dominique Moceanu was born in the Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles, California on September 30, 1981. Dominique is the daughter of Romanian parents Dumitru Moceanu and Camilia Moceanu. Both are former gymnasts and are believed to have arrived in the United States in 1981 after fleeing Ceausescu’s administration in Romania. It was shortly after they settled in the United States that Dominique was born.

Dominique has two younger sisters Jennifer Moceanu and Christina Moceanu. She was raised with Christina while Jennifer was raised by her adoptive parents, Sharon and Gerald Bricker, in Illinois. Jennifer was given up for adoption by her parents the day she was born because she was born without legs and her irresponsible father decided not to raise her for fear of not being able to pay her care bills health.

Dominique attended Northland Christian School as a teenager and went on to graduate from John Carroll University earning a degree in business administration in 2009.

At the age of three, she had already started gymnastic classes in Illinois and later in Lafleur’s in Florida. At the age of 10, she trained under Romanian coaches, Merta and Bela Karolyi in Houston Texas.

Dominique Moceanu married Michael Canales a podiatrist and collegiate gymnast. Two wed on November 4, 2006, in Houston, Texas in a Romanian Orthodox ceremony patterned by her fellow gymnasts Paul Hum, Morgan Hamm, Bart Corner, and Nadia Comaneci.

They first met in 1994 when Ocean was 12 years old, together they have two children Carmen Noel and Vincent Michael Canales.

Dominique Moceanu Gymnastics Career

Training under Moceanu and Bela Karolyi she started participating in international competitions. In 1992 she received the first U.S. national team berth. She continued to the Pan American games winning five medals in uneven bars floor exercise vault and all-around.

In 1994 she won the junior national competition the youngest gymnast to win the USA gymnastics national championships. The following year she took the senior event by storm becoming the youngest gymnast to win the USA gymnastics national championships.

After the Olympics, Moceanu competed in professional gymnastics exhibitions. Training in the family built moceanu gymnastics She competed in the 1997 US nationals placing ninth. That same year she led the US team to the 1997 world championship in Lausanne Switzerland.

She was able to qualify for the all-around, but she placed fourth and won no medals. Moceanu trained under the new coach Lumini a miscenco in1998 and gained a place in that event becoming the only American to achieve that.

She was facing recurring injuries and other issues and went on hiatus until 2005 when she announced a comeback. she was however unsuccessful with the cameback and retired. She is now a part-time coach at Gymnastics World in Broadview Heights Ohio. Also gives private lessons and conducts clinics in the US.
