Murli Manohar Joshi is an Indian politician, a leading member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of which he was the President between 1991 & 1993, and the current Member of Parliament for Kanpur. He later became the Union Human Resources Development minister in the National Democratic Alliance government. He is best known for his views on Hindu socio-politics and for his affiliation with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), of which he had been a pracharak.

Murli Manohar Joshi was born in Delhi on 5 January 1934. His family hails from Almora in the Kumaon region, which is now part of the Uttarakhand state. His father’s name was Manmohan Joshi. The family belongs to the Brahmin community. In 1956, Joshi was married to Tarla Joshi, a lady of his community and similar family background, in a match arranged by their families in the usual Indian way. The lifelong marriage has proven entirely harmonious and conventional. The couple are the parents of two daughters, Nivedita and Priyamvada.

He along with Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Sharad Pawar was conferred Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian award in India, in January 2017.
Joshi remained a three-term MP from Almora before he tasted a defeat in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections.
Murli was sidelined from his constituency (Varanasi) in 2014, the seat from which Narendra Modi fought the Lok Sabha elections. He later went on to contest from the Kanpur constituency and had a marginal victory after defeating Sriprakash Jaiswal by 2.23 lakh votes.
He served as the Home Minister of India for 13 odd days under the Prime Ministership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1996.
Dr. Joshi has served as BJP’s president between 1991 and 93.
Dr. Joshi was behind the bars during Emergency in India which lasted for about 2 years. He was sent to jail in June 1975 and was released before the 1977 Lok Sabha elections.
Joshi has a Ph.D. in Spectroscopy and has published a research paper relating to physics in the Hindi language. He started teaching Physics at Allahabad University after completing his Doctorate.
He became a member of RSS at quite a young age and participated in the Cow Protection Movement during 1953-54 which demanded to split the land revenue assessment.
